The Meaning of Madaraka

Madaraka Day is a none working holiday in Kenya that is celebrated every 1st of June.  A time when the nation’s leaders coming from all political colors meet and celebrate this occasion with the masses of all levels at the Meru county stadium. A time to celebrate for gaining Kenya’s independence from the British rule and also a time for listening to the President’s and to all the key speaker’s speeches and sentiments.

It was on June 1, 1963, when this  East African nation became a self- governing country under Jomo Kenyatta,  the head of Kenya African National Union (KANU), and the first Prime Minister of Kenya. By December 12, 1963, Kenya has officially gained its independence after 163 years under the British rule. A day when Kenya as a nation, assumed its power from the British and took the responsibility for its governance.
